FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises primary dehydration of magnesium chloride stock to give solid dehydrated intermediate, which finally dehydrated in chlorinators to give anhydrous melt further subjected to electrolysis producing magnesium and chlorine. According to invention, solid dehydrated intermediate, prior to be loaded into chlorinator, is mixed with sodium carbonate, the latter being loaded into chlorinator simultaneously with solid dehydrated intermediate in amount 35 to 65 kg per 1 t anhydrous melt. Content of sodium chloride in anhydrous melt is 12-15%, which increases degree of using chlorine and obtaining optimal content of chlorine in anhydrous melt of carnallite.
EFFECT: optimized composition of electrolysis stock.
