FIELD: primary processing of bast-fiber crops, in particular, flax fiber for obtaining of short-staple flax fibers adaptable for manufacture of mixed yarns.

SUBSTANCE: method involves combing fibers; forming sliver from fiber; feeding sliver to processing zone and providing defibration of fibrous complexes in sliver by carrying-out multiple sign-variable sliding flexures over rounded edges of movable beaters at relative sliding speed of at least 40 m/s; obtaining required length of fibrous complexes during defibration processes by changing sliding speed or distance from sliver clamping zone to processing zone.

EFFECT: reduced linear density of fiber during defibration process, improved quality of cleaning fiber from non-fibrous contaminants and providing for required fiber length variation level.
