FIELD: physics, engineering of accelerators, modulation of electronic beams; possible use for generating periodic series of short pulses of electromagnetic emission, engineering of lasers utilizing free electrons.
SUBSTANCE: surface of multi-barb cathode is affected with quasi-static electronic field and field of coherent electromagnetic wave. Onto surface of one-barbed or multi-barbed cathode at sliding angle coherent electromagnetic wave is sent with electric field vector, lying in plane of falling of wave. To produce deep modulation of beam current, appearing amplitude modulation of total field is utilized, which field is perpendicular to cathode surface.
EFFECT: production of periodic series of electronic blobs, with possible control over current, length of blobs and number of blobs, increased efficiency of method, improved stability of cathode operation and increased lifetime of the same.
