FIELD: physics; navigation.
SUBSTANCE: proposed engineering solution relates to radar and can be used in surveillance radar stations (RS) with a needlelike beam. The said technical outcome is achieved due to that, the method of radar scanning an area in space involves probing angular directions of the said area with signals from the radar station with step-wise movement of the beam of the antenna in space, and determining detection of a target if a signal which exceeds the detection threshold has been detected. When there is shortage of time for scanning the area, the step for moving the beam of the antenna is increased and a lower threshold is set for pre-detection of a target. If a target is pre-detected in the angular direction, the angular space around it is scanned with restoration of the step for moving the beam of the antenna.
EFFECT: averting shortage of time for scanning space using a surveillance radar station with a needlelike beam, ie possibility of scanning an area in space using a radar station with a needlelike beam at a scanning rate where the number of probing signals is less than the number of permitted angular directions.
