FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of preparing workpieces for optical fibres, where glass-forming compounds are deposited on a substrate. The invention also relates to a method of preparing optical fibres, where one end of a solid workpiece is heated, after which optical fibre is drawn from the said heated end. At the deposition step, glass layers are deposited on the inner surface of base - pipes, where the base - pipes are in a conditioned atmosphere. Moisture content in this conditioned atmosphere is less than that in a non-conditioned atmosphere. Moisture content in the conditioned atmosphere is less than 5 g/kg, and the deposition step involves plasma chemical vapour deposition (PCVD). After the said deposition step, the step for seating in a medium in which the atmosphere is conditioned is carried out, where moisture content in the conditioned atmosphere is less than that in a non-conditioned atmosphere.
EFFECT: obtaining a workpiece which essentially does not contain hydroxyl groups and fibre drawn from the workpiece has low attenuation losses.
