SUBSTANCE: method involves emitting a probing radio signal in the direction of a vehicle, receiving the response signal and determining speed by measuring the Doppler frequency shift of the response signal. The response signal of the vehicle is generated by a response signal unit mounted on the vehicle. By generating the response signal which contains information on the vehicle and retransmission thereof, information on the vehicle is extracted from the response signal after reception thereof, and signals which correspond to the vehicle identification number and speed of the vehicle are generated. A device for realising the method is also disclosed.
