FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: laser beam is directed vertically along the Z axis and is viewed in form of a mark on the water-air boundary surface. The laser beam is in form of a laser blade or two perpendicular laser blades. A stretched mark, which is captured by a digital video camera, is viewed and display coordinates are then converted to real coordinates. The wave height is reconstructed at points or along the Y axis or, when using two laser beams, along two perpendicular directions X and Y with a given step, followed by formation of the real instantaneous profile of the water surface. The angle of inclination of the surface is determined from the difference in height of two neighbouring points.
EFFECT: high spatial resolution for enabling reconstruction of the height and inclination of a water surface at each point.
