FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: silicon is obtained by mixing silicon dioxide with magnesium as a reducing agent. Silicon dioxide and magnesium are first purified until achieving total content of nonmetal impurities of not more than 3 ppm. The charge mixture is heated to obtain silicon and magnesium oxide. The silicon is purified from magnesium oxide by converting MgO into a soluble salt, e.g., with hydrochloric acid, chlorine, and then washing with MgCl2. The obtained magnesium chloride can be used to produce magnesium metal and chlorine.
EFFECT: obtaining elementary silicon with low content of nonmetal impurities, low cost of the end product by excluding power consumption at the step for reducing silicon oxide.
