SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the technology of fluorinating powdered material and specifically to a method and a reactor for producing uranium hexafluoride. The method involves feeding powdered uranium-containing material in a descending stream along the central vertical axis of the reactor housing and feeding fluorine gas into the material in a stream formed using a jet of two sets, wherein the centres for inlet of the jet of the first set, directed at an angle to the stream of the material, lie on a circle whose radius is smaller than that of the concentric circle on which lie the centres for inlet of the jet of the second set, directed to the stream of the material axially-tangentially, with constant and equal magnitudes of the velocity of all jets and ratio of fluorine fed by the jet of the first and second sets equal to (1-4):1. The flame reactor has a cylindrical housing and a cover with cooling jackets, a device for feeding powdered material and a fluorine collector made in the cover. The collector is linked to a unit for outlet of gaseous reaction products, a unit for unloading solid ashes and two sets of nozzles. All nozzles are linked to the collector and have identical profiles.

EFFECT: invention ensures uniform distribution of temperature in a flame, reduces temperature to which the cover and wall of the reactor is exposed and prolongs continuous operating life of the reactor.
