FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: disclosed is a method of making a heat treated coated article to be used in shower door applications, window applications or any other suitable applications where transparent coated articles are desired. The method of making a coated article includes a step of heat treating a glass substrate coated with at least a layer of or containing diamond-like carbon (DLC) and an overlying protective film thereon. The protective film consists of a first layer containing zinc or substoichiometric zinc oxide, and a second layer containing zinc oxide. The first layer has thickness of 2000-15000 Å and the second layer has thickness of 500-5000 Å, and is thinner than the first. After and/or during heat treatment (e.g., thermal annealing, heat hardening or bending), the protective film is removed.
EFFECT: preventing burn-out of the DLC layer on the glass during heat treatment and enabling easy removal of the protective film.
