FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the technology of composite materials - cermets, and can be used in producing wear-resistant articles used in tribocouplings. To produce an Al2O3 - Al cermet, aluminium powder with stearic coating on plate-like particles was mixed with aqueous solution of liquid glass with its content in the mixture of 1.0-2.5 wt % with respect to dry residue of substance. The mixture was held at room temperature until completion of the process of formation of sodium stearate and glycerine and then granulated by forcing through a sieve with cell size of 1.5-3.0 mm and then dried. A workpiece was pressed from the mixture at pressure 100-500 MPa and then heat treated in air at temperature 250-300°C for 2.5-10 hours. The workpiece was then heated with an air heat carrier to temperature 550-600°C in order to initiate self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and maintaining that temperature for 45-60 minutes. At the end of isothermic holding, the article was cooled on air to room temperature. The composite material has density of 2.1-2.35 g/cm3, impact-bending strength of 10.7·103-12.0·103 J/m2, coefficient of sliding friction (counterface - SHX-15 steel, normal load - 1SH) on a "rod-disc" scheme 0.13-0.17.

EFFECT: high resistance of the material to destruction due to impact load and lower coefficient of sliding friction.
