FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry and particularly to a method of producing methyl ether of 2-benzo[b]furan-carboxylic acid, which is used as a starting compound in synthesis of pharmaceutical agents. The method involves reaction of benzo[b]furan with carbon tetrabromide and methanol in the presence of an iron-containing catalyst selected from ferrocene (Fe(C5H5)2), iron (III) acetyl acetonate or iron (II) bromide and a radical initiator - H2O2. The reaction is carried out at temperature 90-110°C for 8-10 hours in an argon atmosphere, molar ratio of components [catalyst]:[H2O2]:[benzo[b]furan]:[CBr4]:[methanol]=1:5:100:200:1000-1100.
EFFECT: high output of methyl ether of 2-benzo[b]furan-carboxylic acid, absence of aggressive oxidants, simple technique owing to low power consumption.
