FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in chemical industry. To obtain titanium tetrachloride, low-quality titanium material is fed into a furnace and heated. Said titanium material is continuously fed once the furnace heats to temperature 420±40°C. Chlorine is then fed with volume concentration of 75-85% and temperature in the furnace is kept in the range of 610-650°C as temperature in the furnace slowly increases after the beginning of the reaction. Titanium tetrachloride-containing gas formed during the reaction is accumulated and condensed to obtain liquid titanium tetrachloride and residual gas. The inert chloride residue is then extracted. The low-quality titanium material is carbide slag from shaft furnaces and contains 6-16% titanium carbide.
EFFECT: invention enables to cut expenses, continuous and stable production of titanium tetrachloride, full utilisation of low-quality titanium materials.
