FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: gamma-radiation dose rate at points on the perimetre of an area inside which the source is located is measured and points with the least and highest dose rate as well as two points with average dose rate are determined. The selected points with average dose rate values lie at different sides of the line which joints the points with the maximum and minimum dose rate values; two straight exploration routes are outlines, said routes being sections which join the point with the minimum dose rate with points where there is average dose rate; dose rate values are measured at points lying on said sections; curves of change in dose rate along the exploration routes are plotted; points with maximum dose rate values on the routes are determined using said curves and two perpendicular lines to the corresponding route lines are constructed in these points; the point of intersection of these perpendicular lines which indicates the position of the source of ionising radiation is found.

EFFECT: reduced exposure of persons searching for gamma-radiation sources using portable devices.
