FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing (E)-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-one (benzalacetone) (I) which can be used as a taste and aroma additive in the food industry and perfumery. The method involves reaction of styrene and acetic anhydride in the presence of zeolite Beta in H-form at temperature of 80-130°C, catalyst amount of 10-50 wt % (with respect to the mixture of styrene and acetic anhydride, taken in molar ratio of 1:1) and molar ratio of styrene to acetic anhydride of 1:2-8.
EFFECT: invention enables to obtain the end product using a simple and low-cost method as well as readily available reactants.
