FIELD: power engineering.
SUBSTANCE: method consists in registration of the form of voltage and current curves during the process of disconnection of a damaged phase of a line by circuit breakers, identification of a moment of emergency current interruption from the registered form of the line phase current, identification of a free component of discharge of a shorted section of the line from the registered form of phase voltage, analysis of a spectral characteristic of the specified free component, definition of attenuation of an envelope of the free voltage component, identification of frequency f0 in the spectral component with highest voltage amplitude, definition of preliminary value of the length of the shorted section with account of running parameters of the line for the frequency f0, definition of the value of transition resistance in the place of short circuit and definition of the distance to the place of damage on the line as the substantial part of the value calculated in accordance with the formula:
EFFECT: increased validity of distance detection to a place of damage in a power transmission line.
