FIELD: electric power industry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to power engineering and can be used to determine the point of damage on overhead power transmission lines equipped with a lightning protection cable along the entire length. Damaged phase of the power transmission line is determined, phase voltages and currents of emergency and pre-emergency modes are measured at the beginning of the power transmission line, symmetrical components of currents are determined by the measured phase currents, purely emergency current of direct sequence is determined as difference of currents of direct sequence of emergency and pre-emergency modes. When calculating the distance, current of zero, negative sequence or purely emergency current of positive sequence is selected as reference current. In the memory of the device implementing the method, along with the parameters of the overhead power transmission line, information on the parameters of resistances of the systems connected to the power transmission line is stored and used in subsequent calculations. Effect of the reactive component of the damage resistance on the accuracy of determining the point of damage of the overhead power transmission line is minimized when calculating the distance to the point of damage by solving a quadratic equation. Roots of quadratic equation are checked in comparison unit for possible location within the limits of overhead power transmission line. Value of the root of the quadratic equation lying within the limits of the overhead power transmission line is taken as the value of the distance to the point of damage and is transmitted from the output of the comparator unit to the output of the device which implements the method.

EFFECT: high accuracy of determining the distance to the point of damage on overhead power transmission lines equipped with a lightning protection cable.
