SUBSTANCE: method includes cleaning of external surface of an electric insulating structure from dirt and application of a hydrophobic coating on the basis of organosilicic compound of cold hardening, which is liquid or paste-like in the initial condition, containing silicon low-molecular rubber, a filler, and also a hardener. Prior to cleaning of the surface from dirt, its moisture availability is determined. If there is moisture, the hydrophobisated surface is dried together with the dirt, the dry surface is cleaned only from non-cementing dirt, afterwards one or several layers of the hydrophobic coating is applied. Thickness of the applied layer is selected depending on the value of maximum permissible working voltage and on maximum intensity of electric field in the section of metallic reinforcement. EFFECT: increased efficiency of the method, provision of high values of discharge voltages during operation of an electric insulating structure under conditions of dirt of various extent and moisture.
