SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to surgery, and can be used to determine a lower extremity amputation level in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus with necrotic feet. That is ensured by applying a thermal sensor on the skin of a volar surface of the distal phalange of the right index finger. A rest temperature is measured for 10 minutes. With the temperature recorded continuously, an indirect cold test is conducted with the left hand immersed in a water-ice bath at a temperature of 0°C for 3 minutes. The results are recorded on the 10^th minute prior to the test and on the 13^th minute after the cold test. That is followed by measuring a temperature (T) difference by a specific formula. If T falls within the range of 0°C to -0.15°C, the indications for a minor lower extremity amputation are stated. If T is -0.15°C or less, the indications for a major lower extremity amputation is required.

EFFECT: method provides a higher accuracy of detecting an adequate lower extremity amputation level in the given patients.
