FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method includes preparing a sample, obtaining atomic emission spectra and identifying oxygen from a spectral emission line with wavelength of 777.19 nm. The source used to excite atomic emission spectra is a frequency double-pulse laser based on yttrium aluminium garnet, activated with neodymium, with wavelength of 1064 nm and inter-pulse delay of 5-10 mcs. The sample is prepared by pressing the analysed material and then treating the surface of the sample with a laser. When using the invention, the total relative error in determining the weight ratio of oxygen in metal powders is not more than 15 wt %; the range of determining the weight ratio of oxygen in metal powders is 0.1 to 10 wt %.
