FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to microwave electronics and is intended for generating multi-velocity non-laminar electron beams. The method of generating an electron beam includes emitting electrons from a cathode, accelerating the electrons with an accelerating electrode with potential U0 and decelerating the electrons. Deceleration is carried out using a grid with potential U1<U0, which overlaps part of the electron beam, resulting in spread of electron velocities in the electron beam.
EFFECT: increased spread of electron velocities in an the region of an electron gun through controlled deceleration of part of an electron beam, particularly its peripheral part.
