FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: fibre is obtained in a glass-melting furnace which is free of platinum or other noble metal-based materials. One of the compositions for making fibre includes, wt %: 50 to 75 SiO2; 15 to 30 Al2O3; 5 to 20 MgO; 0 to 10 CaO; and 0 to 5 R2O, where R2O equals the sum of Li2O, Na2O and K2O. The composition has a higher fibre formation temperature of 2400°F (1316°C) to 2900°F (1593°C), and/or a liquid phase temperature lower than the fibre formation temperature of 45°F (25°C). Another composition includes, wt %: 64 to 75 SiO2; 16 to 24 Al2O3; 8 to 12 MgO; and 0.25 to 3 R2O, where R2O equals the sum of Li2O, Na2O and K2O, and has fibre formation temperature lower than 2650°F (1454°C) and °ΔT of not less than 80°F (45°C).

EFFECT: producing high-quality fibres in furnaces and feed channels free of platinum and other noble metal-based materials, and low cost of producing glass fibres.
