FIELD: psychology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to psychophysiology, method of determining language and professional competence and can be used for checking the level of knowledge in educational systems when evaluating professional capabilities and similar psychophysiological studies that use tests. Measuring the significant parameters of eye movement of a testee while the latter is working with two texts - simple and marking, determining the coefficients of the significant parameters of eye movement. Measuring three significant parameters of eye movement - duration of stops, duration of saccades and amplitude of saccades. Determining the coefficient of duration of stops when searching for an answer to a question in the text, determining the coefficient of duration of saccades when reading the texts and determining the amplitude of saccades when reading the texts by using a mathematical formula. Competence is assessed by comparing the obtained values of coefficients of the significant parameters of the testee with the values of coefficients of the similar parameters of competent and incompetent people, empirically determined.

EFFECT: method allows more objective assessment of language and professional competence by determining values of coefficients of three significant parameters of the eye movement when reading a text and searching an answer to a question in it.
