FIELD: engines and pumps.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines. The method of engine operation includes cosing of the backpressure valve at a certain temperature of the selected component, regulating the intake and/or exhaust valve operation so as to reduce the internal recirculation of cylinder exhaust gases. In the process of backpressure valve closing, exhaust backpressure system damage indication is performed, if the selected engine operating parameter remains unchanged. The selected component may be represented by a catalytic converter located upstream of the backpressure valve. The backpressure valve may be closed when the catalytic converter temperature is below the threshold. The selected operating parameter may be represented by engine crankshaft acceleration. Engine operation method and engine system are disclosed.

EFFECT: invention allows to increase the detection speed of exhaust backpressure system damage while maintaining combustion stability.
