SUBSTANCE: invention relates to mechanical engineering, specifically to methods of operating a vehicle engine. Method of operating engine (10) with deactivated cylinders (14), in which a command is sent to re-activate deactivated cylinder (14). Operation of engine (10) is regulated when the oxygen concentration in intake manifold (146) of engine (10) falls below a threshold value, wherein the oxygen concentration is present for a predetermined time period after the command to re-activate cylinder (14). Also disclosed is a variant of the method of operating an engine with deactivated cylinders and the engine system.

EFFECT: technical result is higher load-bearing capacity of the engine in terms of torque without the need to activate the cylinders, in which exhaust valves operate at reduced capacity.
