FIELD: engines and pumps.
SUBSTANCE: internal combustion engine (ICE) is provided with an exhaust gas recirculation device (EGR) and is configured to perform a mode based on the first air-fuel ratio and a mode based on the second air-fuel ratio which is leaner than the first air-fuel ratio. In the case when the ECU unit reduces the amount of air entering the combustion chamber and reduces the EGR fraction in response to the request for the ICE to reduce the torque by a predetermined amount, the ECU unit executes the mode based on the first air-fuel ratio in the case when immediately preceding EGR fraction, just before sending the request for torque reduction, is lower than the first threshold value, and performs a layer-by-layer combustion mode based on the second air-fuel ratio in the case when the immediately preceding EGR fraction is equal to or higher than the first threshold value.
EFFECT: improved stability of the combustion process in the mode of torque reduction.
