FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: SEM-EDS data points are taken and compared with many known data points. Any data point that is not sufficiently similar to a known data point is classified as unknown and clustered with similar unknown data points. After all data points have been analysed, any clusters of unknown data points with sufficient number of data points are further analysed in order to determine their characteristics. All clusters of unknown data points with insufficient data points are considered as emissions and discarded in order to allow further analysis.
EFFECT: providing an opportunity to improve identification of minerals, present in the sample.
