FIELD: measurement technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention is related to a method and a system for identifying microorganisms in a sample by assessing the vibrational spectrum. The method comprises the steps of preparing a database of known spectra and obtaining pre-calculated models from known spectra, the pre-calculated models being associated with hierarchically structured categories and/or classification groups of microorganisms. Spectra of unknown microbial samples are compared with pre-calculated microbial identification models of progressively smaller categories and/or classification groups to provide scores indicating that the unknown sample belongs to the specified microorganism categories and/or classification groups.
EFFECT: increasing the accuracy and reducing the analysis time without using significant computing power.
