FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: method includes charging a furnace after melt discharge by feeding magnesite powder to damaged sections of side walls packing of the furnace and hearth side walls, loading the charge into the furnace, loading the charge into the furnace, adding flux, melting the charge, oxidation of carbon with gaseous oxygen, dephosphorization and dephosphorization of metal, cutting slag, tapping steel into a ladle. The flux is introduced into furnace from mixture of serpentinite and magnesite containing components in the following ratio (wt %): MgO≥40; CaO≤5; SiO2≤40; Fe2O3≤8; Al2O3≤1; H2O≤2; loss on ignition is ≤47%. The flux has grain size of not more than 100 mm, and flux consumption for melting is 5 -20 kg/t. The content of MgO in slag during the entire melting ranges from 8 to 14%. The flux is introduced during charge loading, and/or before melting the slag, and/or before discharging the steel into the ladle.
EFFECT: stabilising magnesium oxide content in slag during the entire melting, acceleration of lime dissolution, reduction of slag viscosity and improvement of its refining capacity, reduction of average consumption of magnesite powder for threading, increased campaign duration of arc steel-making furnaces.
