FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: method includes charging a furnace after melt discharge by feeding magnesite powder to damaged sections of side walls packing of the furnace and hearth side walls, loading the charge into the furnace, adding flux, melting the charge, oxidation period of melting, reduction period of melting, discharging the melt. At that the flux is introduced into the furnace of serpentinite and magnesite mixture containing components in the following ratio, wt %: MgO≥40; CaO≤5; SiO2≤40; Fe2O3≤8; Al2O3≤1; H2O≤2; loss on ignition is ≤47%. The flux has grain size of not more than 100 mm, and flux consumption for melting is 5-20 kg/t. The content of MgO in the slag during the entire melting is 8-14%. The flux is introduced during charge loading and/or charge melting and/or oxidizing period.
EFFECT: invention makes it possible to stabilise the MgO content in the slag during the entire melting, to accelerate the dissolution of lime, to reduce viscosity of the slag and to increase its refining capacity, to reduce the average consumption of magnesite powder for filling, and to increase the campaign duration of the arc steel-making furnaces.
