FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracic cavity of the deceased newborn is performed in T2 mode. On the tomographs in the frontal projection, the volume of both lungs (LV) and the volume of the thoracic cavity (TCV) are determined, on the basis of which the index of lung underdevelopment is calculated according to the formula: LV/TCV. For values less than 0.2, the presence of pulmonary hypoplasia is diagnosed as the immediate cause of the newborn's death. With an index value of at least 0.2, a conclusion is made about the absence of pulmonary hypoplasia as the immediate cause of death.

EFFECT: method provides fast, objective, non-invasive diagnostics of pulmonary hypoplasia as the immediate cause of the newborn's death.
