FIELD: information technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video coding, namely to methods for encoding syntactic elements during video coding process. In a method for encoding a reference picture index syntax element, the video image index value is binarized during the video encoding process. Bins of the binarized value of the reference image index in the context-encoding mode of the context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) process are encoded. It is determined that the binarized value of the reference image index contains more bins, encoded in the context encoding mode, and encode the other bins of the binarized reference picture index value in the encoding mode with the CABAC process bypass.
EFFECT: technical result is the reduction of lag in the coding of syntactic elements, which include a combination of context-encoded beans and coded by-pass bins.
