FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in cases of one passive optical-electronic infrared detection method (DM) together with a laser rangefinder for alarm cover when needed determination of the direction of motion detected by the intruder. The method consists in estimating a section of the road to find the bend of a road whose radius does not exceed 40 percent of the length of the detection zone (DZ); deployment of DM so that its DZ crosses the road in two sections on both sides of the bend point of the road; installation together with DM of a laser range finder whose optical axis is aligned with the axis of the DZ DM; turn on the laser range finder twice on command of the DM while the latter is in the alarm mode and measure the distance to the intruder; ensuring the transmission of an alarm signal from the DM when the intruder crosses his DA and measured distances to him in the system for collecting and processing information; application of the algorithm for determining the direction of motion of the intruder with respect to distances measured by the range finder: if the distance value for the first alarm is greater than the distance value for the second alarm signal, the direction of the violator's movement is toward DM if the distance value for the first alarm is less than the distance value at the second alarm signal, then the direction of the violator's movement - away from the DM.

EFFECT: ability to determine the direction of motion of a detected intruder using only one DM.
