SUBSTANCE: invention relates to azetidinium-containing copolymers and to use thereof for preparation of silicone-free hydrogel coatings on silicone hydrogel contact lenses. Azetidinium-containing copolymer comprising monomer units derived from at least one vinyl monomer containing a carboxyl group is proposed, vinyl monomer containing an amino group, or combinations thereof, and monomeric azetidinium-containing units. Variants of a method for producing coated silicone hydrogel contact lenses, each with a crosslinked hydrophilic coating, and variants of appropriate contact lenses.

EFFECT: copolymer according to the invention is reactive and has a desired level of hydrophilicity and/or functional group content to apply a non-silicone-containing hydrogel coating to a silicone hydrogel contact lens.
