SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the protection of documents against counterfeit and illegal reproduction, in particular to process for producing optical effect layer (OEL) on a substrate. Method includes: a) applying a substrate surface a coating composition, comprising platelet- shaped magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles and a binder material, wherein said coating composition being in a first state; b) exposing the coating composition to a dynamic magnetic field of a first magnetic-field-generating device, to bi-axia!ly orient at least a part of the platelet-shaped magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles; c) the effect on the resulting coating composition of the static magnetic field of the magnetic-field-generating device, re-orienting at least a part of the platelet-shaped magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles; d) ensuring the solidification of the resulting coating composition to the second state with fixation of the platelet magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles in their adopted positions and with the orientations adopted by them.
EFFECT: technical result is the provision on the protected document of complicated and / or dynamic optical effects, and / or improved reflectivity and / or contrast.
