FIELD: biochemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for removing sulphur from a fluid. Method comprises providing a first fluid containing sulphur-containing compounds, adsorbing sulphur from the first fluid on an adsorbent, regenerating the adsorbent by oxidation of the adsorbed sulphur to sulphur dioxide, whereby an off-gas stream containing sulphur dioxide is formed, providing a second fluid, containing hydrogen sulphide, using the second fluid and the off-gas stream as reactants in a Claus process for producing elemental sulphur, wherein part of the hydrogen sulphide is oxidised to sulphur dioxide and water at the reaction temperature, and the remaining hydrogen sulphide and the resulting sulphur oxide and the sulphur oxide from the off-gas are converted to elemental sulphur, in which the off-gas stream dilutes the second fluid and in which the oxygen necessary for the oxidation of the hydrogen sulphide is provided by an air stream. Claus process is enriched with oxygen to maintain a reaction temperature equal to or higher than 1100 °C, preferably higher than 1200 °C, preferably higher than 1250 °C, preferably higher than 1300 °C, preferably higher than 1400 °C.
EFFECT: invention provides an efficient and cheap method of removing sulphur.
