FIELD: manufacturing technology.
SUBSTANCE: cutting tool includes a base material and a coating layer formed on the surface of the base material. Coating layer comprises at least one α-type aluminum oxide layer. In a cross section of the α-type which is substantially parallel to the surface of the base material, when the angle formed between a normal to the cross section and a normal to the (222) face of particles in the α-type aluminum oxide layer is defined as the orientation difference and when the area of the particles having an orientation difference of 0–90°, is defined as 100 % of the cross section by area, and the area of the particles in the α-type aluminum oxide layer having an orientation difference of 0–90°, is divided into sections at a pitch of 10°, then the total area Sa of the particles in the α-type aluminum oxide layer having an orientation difference of 20° or more to less than 30°, is the maximum within the total of the areas of the nine sections at a pitch of 10°.
EFFECT: coated cutting tool is proposed.
