FIELD: measuring equipment.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measuring technology and can be used for contactless measurement of the length of extended metal products, in particular metal pipes as finished products, and in their manufacture. Method for measuring the length of an extended metal product includes the following steps: the controlled metal article is placed in an isolated manner above the grounded metal plane, in the aggregate of conductors – an extended metal product and a given plane – excite at a fixed frequency electromagnetic waves of the TEM type as in a segment of a long line and the phase shift of the long line of electromagnetic waves reflected from the end of this segment is measured. By this phase shift, the length of the extended metal article is judged and the phase velocity of the electromagnetic waves is determined at the measuring section. By changing the fixed frequency of the long line of electromagnetic waves excited in the segment, the ratio of this frequency and the phase velocity of the electromagnetic waves to the measuring section is kept constant.

EFFECT: broader functional capabilities and higher measurement accuracy.
