SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measuring technology and can be used for non-contact measurement of the length of extended metal products, in particular metal pipes, rods, both finished products and in their production at metallurgical, machine-building enterprises. In the method for measuring the length of an extended metal product, in which the controlled metal product is placed in isolation above a grounded metal plane, in a set of conductors - an extended metal product and this plane, TEM-type electromagnetic waves are excited at a fixed frequency, and in the first cycle of measurements, the phase shift Δϕ1 is measured, additionally in the second cycle of measurements, it is short-circuited in one of the sections of a segment of a long line at a fixed length 
from the first open end and the phase shift Δϕ2 of electromagnetic waves is measured, the measured phase shifts Δϕ1 and Δϕ2 are jointly converted according to ratio.
EFFECT: expanding the functionality of the measurement method due to the simplification of the measurement process.
