SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a measuring technique and can be used for contactless determination of the length of extended metal products, in particular metal pipes as finished products, and during their manufacture at metallurgical, machine-building enterprises. Essence of the claimed technical solution lies in the fact that in the proposed method for determining the length of extended metal product, in which the article to be inspected is placed in isolation above the grounded metal plane, in the aggregate of conductors – an extended metal product and a given plane – excite electromagnetic oscillations of the TEM type as in a segment of a long line open at the ends, and in the first measurement step the resonant frequency f1 electromagnetic oscillations of this segment of a long line, in addition, in the second measurement cycle, the resonance frequency f2 electromagnetic oscillations of this segment of a long line when it is short-circuited in one of its sections at a fixed length l0 from another open end, a joint transformation of the measured resonant frequencies f1 and f2 according to the relation , where m=0, 1, 2, …; n=1, 2, …, the result of which is judged on the length of extended metal product.

EFFECT: broader functional capabilities of the measurement method due to the increased accuracy of measuring the length of the extended metal product.
