SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measuring technology and can be used for contactless determination of the length of extended metal products, in particular metal pipes as finished products, and in their production at metallurgical and machine building enterprises. Essence of the claimed technical solution lies in the fact that in the proposed method for determining the length of extended metal product, in which the monitored article is placed isolated above the grounded metal plane, in the aggregate of conductors – an extended metal product and a given plane – stimulate electromagnetic oscillations of the TEM type both in a length of a long line that is open at the ends, and in the first measurement cycle a resonant frequency ƒ1 of electromagnetic oscillations of this length of the long line, in addition, in the second measurement cycle, the resonant frequency ƒ2 of electromagnetic oscillations of this length of the long line when it is simultaneously short-circuited in its two sections at a fixed length l0 between them, perform a joint transformation of the measured resonant frequencies ƒ1 and ƒ2 according to the relation , where m=1, 2, …; n=1, 2, …, by the result of which the length of the extended metal product is judged.
EFFECT: broader functional capabilities of the measurement method due to the increased accuracy of measuring the length of the extended metal product.
