FIELD: seismology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of seismology and can be used to estimate the error in determining the coordinates of epicenters of earthquakes. Map of distribution of epicenters of earthquakes on the territory of the investigated region is constructed. Resulting map is broken down into smaller areas. Function of the dependence of the number of sites with earthquakes on the linear size of sites is constructed in double logarithmic coordinates. This function is approximated by a straight line. Range of sizes of sites with the maximum correlation coefficient of the linear approximation of the function is selected. In the selected range, the size of the sites on which the linear approximation has a local maximum of the correlation coefficient is determined. Indicated size of sites is recorded as an error in determining the coordinates of earthquake epicenters by the seismic monitoring system.

EFFECT: increase in the accuracy of determining the coordinates of earthquake epicenters.
