SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for evaluating the effectiveness of armor-piercing ammunition and armor during their collision and can be used to create new ammunition and new armor for the protection of objects. Method for evaluating the effectiveness of a target against the action of kinetic projectiles is that, on a test target of finite thickness with properties identical to those of the main target, a strike with a projectile in the form of a ball is made at a speed sufficient to create a crater in the impact zone and cause tension cracks perpendicular to the direction of impact in the target. Visually, appearance of the first tension crack in the area between the crater and the rear wall of the target is recorded. Distance B from the rear wall of the target to the crack is measured. If a part of the rear wall of the target is broken off, B value is taken as the thickness of the cut off part at a location perpendicular to the direction of impact. Target with a larger B value with the same collision parameters is considered to be more effective.

EFFECT: possibility of performing an evaluation for different velocities of the collision of the projectile with the target using a new parameter that is a characteristic of the target material.
