SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of analytical chemistry and can be used to identify impurities, in particular microimpurities related to the main component of the test substance, by chromatography-mass spectrometry using derivatization. Method for identifying the impurity of the test substance, which is related to its main component, consists in the fact that the main component of the test substance is initially identified, then the experimental values of the retention times or retention indices, of the main and impurity components in the test substance are determined using a chromatography-mass spectrometer, as well as their mass spectra, an identifiable impurity is detected, among various impurity components, with various identification variants that include a substance related to the main component, further, the main component of the test substance is derivatized by a method that allows one of the identifiable impurity variants to be obtained from it, then, by using a chromatography-mass spectrometer, the experimental retention time or retention index is determined, as well as the mass spectrum of the resulting derivative of the main component, and by comparing them with the corresponding experimental retention time or retention index, as well as with the mass spectrum of the identifiable impurity obtained earlier, as well as with mass spectra or retention time or retention index of known substances, conclude that the resulting derivative of the main component of the test substance and the identifiable impurity coincide, and identify the impurity by selecting from the previously identified variants.

EFFECT: technical result is an increase in the accuracy of identification of the impurity of the test substance, which is related to its main component.
