ERROR DETECTION ARRANGEMENTS FOR SURGICAL INSTRUMENT ASSEMBLIES Russian patent published in 2018 - IPC A61B17/68 A61B17/72

Abstract RU 2672524 C2

FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medical equipment, specifically to surgical instruments, and in particular to electrically powered surgical cutting and stapling instruments and staples used therein, which are configured for cutting and stapling tissue. Surgical instrument system comprises a surgical instrument and an end effector, adapted to be attached to the surgical instrument. End effector comprises a first stored datum regarding a first parameter of said end effector, a second stored datum regarding a second parameter of said end effector and a stored checksum value, means for communicating said first stored datum to said surgical instrument, means for communicating said second stored datum to said surgical instrument, means for communicating said stored checksum value to said surgical instrument. Surgical instrument is configured to calculate a calculated checksum value utilising said first stored datum and said second stored datum. Surgical instrument is configured to compare said calculated checksum value to said stored checksum value, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to generate an error message if the calculated checksum value does not match the stored checksum value. Surgical instrument further comprises a firing mechanism and a firing mechanism safety device. Firing mechanism is movable between a first position and an activated position. Firing mechanism safety device is adapted to function between an unlocked state and a locked state. Firing mechanism safety device prevents activation of the firing mechanism when the firing mechanism safety device is in a locked state, and in doing so, the error message includes the shift of the firing mechanism safety device to the locked state. In the second embodiment, the surgical instrument system comprises the above-mentioned surgical instrument and an end effector. Surgical instrument comprises a receiver and a controller. Receiver is configured to receive a communication signal. Controller is configured to determine whether the communication signal has been completely received by the receiver. End effector includes a transmitter configured to emit a communication signal that includes the stored checksum value. Controller is configured to calculate the calculated checksum value, including the first stored datum and the second stored datum, and compare the calculated checksum value with the stored checksum value. In the third embodiment, the surgical instrument system comprises the above-noted surgical instrument and an end effector. End effector includes a transmitter configured to emit a communication signal that sequentially includes a start bit, a first stored datum regarding the first parameter of said end effector, a second stored datum regarding the second parameter of said end effector, and an end bit. Surgical instrument is configured to identify the start bit and the end bit. Surgical instrument is configured to generate an error message if at least one of the start bit and the end bit is not identified. In the fourth embodiment, the surgical instrument system comprises the above-mentioned end effector and surgical instrument. Surgical instrument comprises means for establishing the first stored datum, the second stored datum and the stored checksum value and means for calculating the calculated checksum value. Means of calculating the calculated checksum value includes the first stored datum and the second stored datum, for comparing the calculated checksum value with the stored checksum value. Surgical instrument is configured to generate an error message if the calculated checksum value does not match the stored checksum value.

EFFECT: use of inventions enables to detect errors in units of a surgical instrument.
