SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in the internal combustion engines. Method of controlling engine (10) comprises adjusting a position of throttle (21) based on a dilution threshold when a total air charge dilution level is greater than the dilution threshold. Total air charge dilution level is determined based on an output of intake oxygen sensor (162). Dilution threshold is determined depending on the saturation vapour pressure at throttle (21) inlet temperature when exhaust gas recirculation is not flowing. Dilution threshold also depends on a target exhaust gas recirculation rate when exhaust gas recirculation is flowing. Disclosed are versions of the method of controlling an engine and an engine system.

EFFECT: improving the accuracy of estimating the air charge required to generate the required torque and to prevent incorrect throttle control.
