FIELD: internal combustion engines.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in control systems of internal combustion engines. Disclosed are methods and system for assessing water quality in a system of water injection into a motor using existing motor sensors. Charge temperature change in intake manifold of engine after water injection can be compared with change of oxygen level in sucked air for determination of error between amount of water supplied to engine and amount of water actually used in engine. This error can be correlated with water quality and can be used for correction of subsequent commands of water injection.

EFFECT: invention enables to determine the quality of water injected into a motor without using additional sensors or equipment, optimize water injection into the engine, minimizing the probability of damage to engine components as a result of using contaminated water or water of inadequate quality.
