SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for applying a piece of an elastomeric element. Technical result is achieved by a method of applying piece (100) of a band-like elastomeric element on forming support (500) in a process for building a tyre for vehicle wheels, wherein a piece (100) of an elastomeric element of a given nominal length is supplied to forming support (500) in a given feed direction (A). Actual length of piece (100) of elastomeric element in the feed direction (A) is measured. If the actual length is less than or equal to the circumference of receiving surface (510) formed on forming support (500), said piece (100) of the elastomeric element is applied on receiving surface (510), rotating forming support (500) around axis of rotation (X). If the actual length is less than the circumference of receiving surface (510), when applying said piece (100) of elastomeric element on receiving surface (510), piece (100) of elastomeric element is compressed on said receiving surface (510) with a compressive force selected as a function of the actual length and so as to stretch piece (100) so that at the end of the applying piece (100) the actual length is essentially the same as the circumference of receiving surface (510). Value of the compressive force is chosen from a correlation table between the compressive force and the actual length obtained in the previous calibration process. Correlation table is modifiable in real time based on the feedback received during the previous application of another piece of the elastomeric element.
EFFECT: technical result is to improve the accuracy and repeatability of connecting front and rear ends of the piece applied on the forming support.
