SUBSTANCE: invention relates to systems and methods for selective turning on and off the cylinders of engines. Engine (10) control method comprises the steps in which the engine (10) cylinders are shut off by means of the controller (12) in accordance with the first cylinder shutdown strategy, when the actual total number of valve actuator status changes is below the first threshold. And also the engine (10) cylinders are shut down by means of the controller (12) in accordance with the second cylinder shutdown strategy when the actual total number of changes in the valve actuator status exceeds the second threshold value. Also disclosed is a version of the engine control method and engine system.

EFFECT: technical result consists in increasing the service life of the engine valve actuators by reducing the intensity of the change in the valve actuator state.
