SUBSTANCE: invention relates to mechanical engineering, in particular, to engine control systems and methods. Engine control method includes steps in which increase the actual total number of available cylinder operating modes from the first actual total number of available cylinder operating modes to the second actual total number of available modes of operation of the cylinders by means of a controller, in response to an assessment of road roughness, exceeding the threshold value of roughness. Engine is controlled by the controller in the cylinder shutdown mode after increasing the actual total number of available cylinder modes. Cylinder shutdown mode is entered after calculating the actual total number of engine events, starting with the first evaluation of road roughness, exceeding the threshold value of the roughness, and the specified first assessment is performed after the last assessment of the roughness of the road, not exceeding the threshold value of the roughness. Variants of the method of engine control are also disclosed.
EFFECT: technical result is an increase in fuel economy.
